Abstract
This thesis aims at studying the unmarkedness and markednessin Arabic grammar. The concept of unmarkedness and markednessis virtually found in Chomsky's generative transformationalgrammar, not in Arabic grammar. Chomsky, in his theory, dividedlanguage properties into two kinds: universal properties and relativeproperties. As for the universal properties, he described it ascommon properties in all human languages. On the other hand, hedescribed the relative properties as exceptional properties of theparticular languages, pointing out that the relative properties have arelation with the markedness. In the theory of markedness, theconcept of markedness is ascribed to the exceptional propertiescompared to the universal properties. Chomsky tried to explain the language acquisition by way of theconcept of unmarkedness and markedness. For him, the languageacquisition is a procedure of the acquisition of the rules ofmarkedness on the basis of the rules of unmarkedness which thespeaker has innately. The purpose of the thesis is to examine the unmarkedness andmarkedness in Arabic grammar although they have their roots inmodern linguistics. The interesting point is that we can find thesimilar concepts to the unmarkedness and markedness in Arabicgrammar. They are so called concept of ʔaṣl and farʕ. The termsʔaṣl and farʕ were widely used by early Arab grammarians and was shaped influenced by Islamic legal jurisprudence. The term ʔaṣl isconsidered as the concept of unmarkedness and the term farʕ as theconcept of markedness. Arab grammarians used the terms ʔaṣl andfarʕ in all the levels of the language. The standard of ʔaṣl and farʕis the presence or absence of the markers denoting the gender, thedefinitiveness and the cases as well as the lighter/heavier andstronger/weaker. In addition, Arab grammarians have developed therule of so called al-taʔwīl which reconstruct ʔaṣl from farʕ contraryto the concept ʕillah which explains the transformation of ʔaṣl intofarʕ. These concetps have virtually contributed to expanding therules of Arabic grammar.
