Abstract

This study examines Exhuma(2024), the terminus of Jang Jae-hyun’s occult trilogy, to clarify how the scapegoat mechanism and sacrificial narrative are critically transformed in a Korean context and how musok(Korean shamanism) is rearticulated—within the director’s auteurist framework—as both a narrative motor and a problem-solving device. The analysis adopts René Girard’s theory of sacrifice as its theoretical lens and combines comparative textual analysis of the trilogy with scene-level examinations of narration and character. The principal findings are as follows. First, The Priests(2015), Svaha: The Sixth Finger(2019), and Exhuma share a narrative architecture grounded in scapegoat ideology: diegetic Others are marked as scapegoats, while narrative agents are cast as marginal protagonists. Among these, Exhuma recenters “nation” and “history” as the axis of narration, exposing the articulation between scapegoat ideology and the exclusionary logic of nationalism; by laying bare its structural limits, the film proposes an ethical shift from exclusion of the Other to reception of the Other, thereby expanding the meaning of community and plotting a narrative of restoration and cohesion. Second, whereas musok has long been peripheral in Korean occult cinema, Exhuma elevates it into a practical system of problem-solving; in particular, its reconfiguration of the female mudang(shaman) overturns the genre’s conventional gender roles. Third, through these narrative and generic reconfigurations, Exhuma reduces reliance on the Western exorcism template and demonstrates the feasibility of a “Korean occult” genre grammar grounded in indigenous modes of thought. In sum, by critically reworking the sacrificial script to ethically reinspect self–Other relations and by installing musok as the axis of communal recovery to construct a narrative of haewon(解冤, ritual redress of grievance), Exhuma seeks autonomy from established genre conventions and narrative habits of the occult film. Building on this analysis, the study elucidates the film’s political, social, and cultural implications and proposes an interpretive framework explaining how Exhuma, by mediating historical context, indigenous religious–intellectual schemata, and ethical imagination, performs a distinctive genre practice that in turn renews the discursive terrain of the Korean occult genre and helps account for its commercial success.
