Abstract

This study examines how the webtoon Strange Tales of the War(사변괴담) reconstructs the landscape of the Korean War and explores its meanings. In particular, it analyzes how the historical subject of the Korean War—rarely addressed in contemporary webtoons—is reimagined through genre motifs such as shamanic ghosts and zombies (the living corpses [saengsi, 生屍] appearing in the text) Within the framework of the “Korean occult,” this paper focuses on the webtoon’s distinctive genre transformation and its reinterpretation of war-time reality. Chapter 2 investigates the omnibus structure of Strange Tales of the War and its genre features, especially those associated with the zombie narrative. Chapter 3 then discusses the “Concubine” and “Monggeumpo” episodes, analyzing how shamanic ghosts and the living corpses of the Baekbaek-gyo cult are portrayed as possessing tangible power, while religious salvation ultimately proves impossible. Chapter 4 turns to the “Student Soldiers” and “Well” episodes, examining how ghosts and living corpses function as hallucinatory or nightmarish devices that allow characters to evade personal responsibility. By mobilizing the genre conventions of ghosts and zombies, Strange Tales of the War renders the Korean War both familiar and uncanny. Instead of depicting history through binary oppositions—ideology versus family affection, perpetrators versus victims—the work illuminates the ambiguous and intricate circumstances that resist moral or ideological simplification. In particular, it repeatedly exposes the violence and oppression committed in the name of family, thereby compelling readers to reconsider the problematic persistence of familism in contemporary Korean society.
