Abstract
In contemporary society, the influence of traditional religions has declined, yet interest in supernatural beings and mysterious powers has paradoxically increased. Popular films have emerged as significant intermediaries in this context, creating new forms of spiritual discourse that resonate with younger generations. These individuals often seek religiosity not only in communal gatherings but also in mass media centered around individual figures. This study focuses on two Korean films, The Wailing (Gokseong) and Exhuma (Pamyo), both of which vividly depict Korean shamanism and indigenous spiritual practices through engaging narratives. By analyzing the shamanistic elements embedded in these films, this research explores how cinematic stories symbolically address existential fears, helplessness, and the desire for control while simultaneously providing surrogate fulfillment for contemporary spiritual needs. Furthermore, these narratives reflect the socio-psychological dynamics underlying new religious movements, highlighting the cultural similarities and intersections between popular culture and emerging forms of religiosity. The findings suggest that cinema does not merely reflect spiritual imagination; it actively contributes to the formation and diffusion of new religious phenomena. By examining these intersections, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how popular media shapes religious imagination and meets the spiritual needs of modern society.
