Abstract
This study analyzes the operational status and participant experiences of the Life Sharing Classroom program in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, a project aimed at promoting humanistic cultural values and intergenerational communication. Data were collected through on-site monitoring, in-depth interviews with participants, and expert consultations, which were analyzed using qualitative methods. The findings indicate that the program has a positive impact on retired seniors’ social role recovery and mentees’ emotional well-being, promoting core humanistic values such as communication, empathy, sharing, and consideration. Notably, close collaboration and network-building among mentors, tutors, and regional coordinators enabled stable program implementation. Activities including learning circles and the identification of best practices supported a feedback system for enhancing program quality. However, several challenges remain, including the ambiguity surrounding the concept of humanities, structural rigidity, lack of visibility for conflict cases, and absence of performance indicators. To address these issues this study proposes (1) revisiting the program's goals and target groups to clarify its distinctiveness from other humanities initiatives; (2) improving operational efficiency by revising the commissioned management system; (3) providing differentiated guidelines and training tailored to each participant group; and (4) implementing strategies to sustain participant motivation. Furthermore, for wider social dissemination, the study emphasizes the need to (1) strengthen the theoretical foundation of the program to support the expansion of mentoring culture, (2) develop professional mentoring programs and diversify mentoring content, and (3) initiate an R&D-based strategy to promote the collaboration and integration of the program.
