Abstract

This study explores the experiences of mentors who have provided long-term mentoring to care-leaving youth, with the aim of analyzing the effects of mentoring and the meanings of mentor growth. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with six mentors who had maintained relationships with the same mentees for over three years. Both within-case and cross-case analyses were applied. The findings revealed that mentors perceived mentoring not merely as providing advice or support, but as an integral part of life and a relationship-based practice. Mentors were found to facilitate positive changes in their mentees, such as enhanced social development and increased motivation for independence. Furthermore, mentors internalized mentoring as a form of social contribution through processes of self-reflection, identity expansion, and shifts in their understanding of human relationships. In particular, the continuity of the relationship was identified as a key factor enabling mutual growth between mentors and mentees. Mentoring emerged as a practice that fosters social capital and intergenerational connection. This study highlights the structural value and educational implications of mentoring for care-leaving youth and may serve as a foundational resource for institutionalizing mentoring programs and building educational systems.
