Abstract

This paper deals with some aspects of onomatopoeias from creative Korean fairy tales in a reading textbook for the 5th grade students. In terms of quantitative linguistic approaches, this research investigates two aspect: to what extent onomatopoeias are used and how they are applied in the textbooks. Research results are inferred as follows: First, by measuring the number of onomatopoeias in a sentence level, the ratio of them in a sentence is 11.3%. Their frequency of use is relatively higher in plays or scenarios than in novels. Between onomatopoeias and mimetic words, mimetic words are more used. Second, as morphological characteristics, use of simplified onomatopoeias in fairy-tale texts are frequently used. In particular, derivatives are shown in the form of words combined with suffix -hada. Third, there are a few syntactic characteristics shown. While according to the Hangeul dictionary, onomatopoeia is classified as adverbs in general, in fairy-tale texts onomatopoeias function not only as adverbs but also as nouns, pre-nouns, exclamations, quotes, and so on. Last, newly coined onomatopoeias are often adopted. Among them, there are found a few kinds of words which express laughter.
