Abstract

A variety of definitions on symbolic word assumes the admission on the motivation between sound and meaning. However, the researches on the symbolic words in Korean depend on the obscure intuition for the judgment on the motivation between sound and meaning. Thus, there is no definite conclusion on the motivation between sound and meaning in Korean because of numerous onomatopoetic words. As the first step for the research on the sound symbolism in Korean, this study considers the conventionalization of bird sounds, the non-segmental phoneme to the onomatopoetic words as the ‘categorization of sounds’ by adopting the theory of categorization in the cognitive linguistics. The difference words by country are the important basis for the linguistic arbitrary. In this context, the different symbolic words by country brings the doubt on the motivation of symbolic words. Nevertheless, the native language speakers aware the close relationship between sound and meaning related to the onomatopoetic words. The previous researches regarded the different onomatopoetic words by country as the results from the process to match natural sounds to the sound system in the segmentation process. However, it is not easy to explain the significant differences among onomatopoetic words by country with this explanation. Categorization is the tool that people recognize the sounds by dividing them into th meaningful segments. This study analyzes the phonological structure of onomatopoetic words of bird sounds and examines the process that Korean speakers categorize the bird sounds, the non-segmental phoneme into the segmental phoneme through the experiment to create the onomatopoetic words. Through this analysis and examination, this study identified the phonological structure of word and phoneme that the Korean speakers prefer in recognizing the bird sounds.
