Abstract

In this study, we analyzed how individual metacognitive promotion strategies and social metacognitive promotion strategies according to instructor intervention affect learners’ cognitive load and performance. Our aim was to investigate how metacognitive promotion strategies influence learners’ cognitive load and performance. A total of 56 students from S University in P city participated voluntarily, forming collaborative learning groups of 5-6 individuals. These subjects were then allocated to two experimental groups and one control group. Our findings revealed significant differences among the groups in terms of mental effort and task difficulty, indicating the influence of instructor intervention in online videoconferencing-based collaborative learning. Moreover, performance variations were observed based on instructors’ intervention, with the social metacognition promotion strategy group outperforming the individual metacognition promotion strategy group. These results suggest the effectiveness of metacognitive promotion strategies facilitated by instructors in reducing learners’ perceived task difficulty and enhancing performance in online collaborative learning settings. Additionally, integrating instructors’ intervention in online videoconferencing-based collaborative learning design is recommended to effectively engage learners and optimize their cognitive efforts.
