Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of collaborative learning approaches on learning performance as a strategy for managing cognitive load in complex and ill-structured tasks. For the purpose, the study designed and developed a blog-based learning environment to foster complex and ill-structured learning, and implemented it in the classroom practice. One hundred and four seventh grade students participated and were assigned to three different learning conditions; individual learning, collaborative learning, and collaborative learning with collaboration scripts. In the learning and test phase, students' perceived cognitive load ratings and learning performance tests comprised of factual and conceptual knowledge, and transfer questions were administered. The results of this study indicated that collaborative approaches are superior to individual learning in complex and ill-structured tasks. The collaborative learning with collaboration scripts group invested significantly less intrinsic cognitive load and showed higher transfer scores than the other two groups. These findings suggest that group members who learn collaboratively in complex and ill-structured learning tasks are able to share the intrinsic cognitive load imposed by the complex tasks, they free up working memory capacity at the individual level, that could be used to deal with more complex tasks and process information elements more effectively. In particular, collaboration scripts play an important role in managing cognitive load and facilitating transfer of learning. Further research could be carried out qualitatively to analyze collaborative learning processes such as how the collaborative learning manages cognitive load, and how collaboration scripts affect collaborative processes. Based on this analysis, collaboration scripts need to be more systematically designed for complex and ill-structured tasks.
