Abstract
This study was aimed at analyzing the effects of the scaffolding types, learner’s metacognition and collaborative preferences on collaboration load and knowledge sharing in blended collaborative learning environments. The participants were 122 undergraduate students, who participated to ill-structured problem solving performance in blended collaborative learning for 4 weeks. The participants were paired and assigned into one of three groups: A reflective scaffolding group, a supportive scaffolding group, and a control group. The results were as follows. First, regarding the effects of scaffolding types, the level of metacognition and collaborative preferences on collaboration load, there was no effect according to both scaffolding and scaffolding types. However, the high level of metacognition were increased on germane cognitive load than the lower. As for collaborative preferences, there was no significant difference in collaboration load. Therefore, the use of scaffolding as part of instructional design is demanded to induce a positive outcome and engage in conscious learning processing by increasing effective germane load directly relevant to schema construction and automation. Also, instructional strategy has to be considered to improve metacognition because of the positive effect metacognition has on germane cognitive load. Second, regarding the degree of knowledge acquisition by using scaffolding types, there was an effect for both scaffolding and scaffolding types. As for the test of knowledge contributions equivalence and the degree of shared knowledge according to scaffolding types, achievements for the reflective scaffolding group was not only more closely distributed around the average but also higher in the degree of shared knowledge than other groups. These results imply that instructional assistance offering scaffolding is effective in enhancing knowledge acquisition and shared knowledge for co-learners in collaborative learning.
