Abstract
Criminal profiling is a criminal investigation analysis method that estimates a criminal's psychological and behavioral profile based on tangible and intangible evidence collected from the crime scene. To explore ways to improve the practical use of criminal profiling, We conducted the empirical survey of the police officers about the effectiveness of criminal profiling.. The results was found that the overall positive rate was about 33.5%. By type of respondent, 46% of those with experience in criminal profiling have a useful attitude, more than non-experienced police officers. In addition, the level of usability awareness was higher for profiling-related database system users. The result of the content analysis about open-ended questions showed that there were relatively many negative opinions related to "systematic factors" and "human factors", while positive opinions suggested that "accurate assessment of the psychological characteristics of criminals" and "detailed crime scene analysis" helped the course of investigation. These results suggest that the greater the level of understanding and experience in profiling criminals, the greater the usefulness of profiling for investigators to understand matters in the criminal investigation, especially related to difficult to determine professionally such as suspect psychological characteristics.
