Abstract
This study aims to analyze the acceptability judgments of speakers from Mexico City and Lima regarding conditional sentences constructed with the forms -ra and -se, which are used in the imperfect subjunctive and past perfect subjunctive tenses, respectively. Through this analysis, the study seeks to examine the preference differences between both forms from a sociolinguistic perspective and, in turn, to identify the patterns of linguistic variation and change that manifest in both regions. A total of 44 participants from Mexico City and 59 from Lima took part in the survey, and their data were analyzed to obtain the results. In Mexico City and Lima, the participants evaluated the -ra form more positively. In Mexico City, no significant differences were observed in the evaluation scores of conditional sentences constructed with the -ra and -se forms according to participants’ age or gender. In contrast, in Lima, as the participants’ age decreased, the acceptance of conditional sentences with the -se form also declined, and female participants rated these sentences slightly more positively than male participants. In Lima, a linguistic change is occurring from the -se form to the -ra form, and it is expected that, in the future, just like in Mexico City, the -ra form will become dominant in everyday speech.
