Abstract
This thesis analyzes the significant impact of visual effects (VFX) spectacle in visualizing national trauma in Taegukgi (Kang Je-gyu, 2004), a film produced at the dawn of the digital transition period in Korean cinema. By representing the Korean War at the intersection of digital technology, emotion, and memory, the film simultaneously demonstrates the achievements and limitations of Korean war cinema. It evokes the unspoken pain of war through sensorily excessive spectacle. The core questions of this study are twofold: First, does the film’s VFX technology simply ‘represent’ the historical facts of the war, or does it ‘invoke’ pain that resists representation? Second, can this mode of invocation be explained through the meaning-making process of Postmemory, or is a different approach and understanding required? The study proceeds within this critical framework, referencing trauma theory and memory/media theory while combining textual analysis with a technical-historical reading. One of the significant goals of film technology history is to trace the changes in experience and imagination mediated by technology and thereby reveal their socio-cultural context and meaningful effects. In this paper, we aim to demonstrate that VFX technology is not merely a tool for representing or restoring historical facts but a performative mediator that transforms and sensitizes the structures of emotion and memory. Specifically, by comparing Taegukgi with Saving Private Ryan, this study discusses the historical conditions of the Korean War's representation (division, censorship, a memory regime of silence) and the emotional landscape of the early 2000s Sunshine Policy era. Furthermore, it clarifies how the utilization of VFX technologies—such as previs, digital matte painting, crowd replication, physical simulation, and digital color grading—transformed the paradigm of Korean war film production. And this study examines the nature and context of scenes realized through the combination of these technologies and various cinematic devices, conceptualizing the war spectacle as a device that facilitates the sensory representation and affective experience of trauma. This process positions Taegukgi beyond the framework of a ‘Hollywood imitation,’ establishing it as a film that appropriated its technological limitations and the historical specificity of the Korean War to achieve aesthetic success. It also reveals the utilization of VFX technology as a performative apparatus that engraves the affect of trauma onto the audience's bodies. Ultimately, this study highlights the film's cinematic significance in demonstrating the Korean film industry's technological leap not merely as an industrial achievement but as an attempt to propose a new sensory ethics for dealing with historical scars.
