Abstract
This study analyzes how Korean disaster films, formed in earnest with the introduction of digital visual effects (VFX) during the transitional period from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, built a distinct spectacle through various technical experiments and aesthetic attempts. The films Yonggary (1999), The Siren (2000), Libera Me (2000), and Tube (2003) each employed digital VFX in different ways to visualize the spaces and forms of disaster, and these efforts can be interpreted as uniquely Korean technical and aesthetic endeavors beyond mere imitation of Hollywood. Based on Gilbert Simondon’s theory of the aesthetics of technical objects, this research argues that these films function as efforts to visualize disaster spectacle in the “elemental” stage of technical individuation. At the same time, they embody a form of “meta self-awareness” that reflects the tension between Korea’s internal technical capabilities and external global standards. By focusing on how digital compositing technology created disaster spaces that do not exist in reality and how disasters were visualized as affective entities resembling human figures, this paper examines how Korean disaster films performed aesthetic experiments as a new genre in the digital transition era.
