Abstract

This study examines the introduction and application of digital visual effects (VFX) in Korean cinema during the “Technological Transition Period” spanning from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, analyzing the characteristics and limitations of VFX technologies used in that era. This period marked a transitional phase in which Korean cinema shifted from analog-based special effects to digital production methods, while simultaneously experimenting with unique visual expressions in response to global VFX trends. Focusing on three representative films The Soul Guardians(1998), Ghost in Love (1999), and The Mystery of the Cube(1999), this study analyzes the application of various technologies such as chroma key compositing, 2D image warping, 3D modeling and digital character generation, matte painting, and motion control cameras. These cases demonstrate how Korean filmmakers actively sought to integrate computer-generated imagery (CGI) with live-action footage during a time of rapid technological change. Despite noticeable technical limitations—including low compositing precision, insufficient depth information, and incomplete wire removal—these early experiments served as a crucial foundation for the later internalization and advancement of Korean VFX technologies. This research highlights how these efforts moved beyond merely importing foreign techniques to establishing creative and strategic uses of digital visual effects within Korean cinematic language. Ultimately, it provides valuable documentation of a formative phase in the development of Korean VFX, offering a basis for a more comprehensive understanding of its long-term evolution.
