본 연구는 후각이 지닌 공동체적 속성을 느낌을 둘러싼 논의를 중심으로 드러낸다. 그러기 위해 스티븐 샤비로의 화이트헤드의 느낌 개념의 재전유를 논하고, 앤절라 엘스워스와 시셀 톨라스의 후각예술 퍼포먼스와 안다만 제도의 옹게인들의 후각 중심 문화를 소개한다. 가장 먼저 인간중심주의를 형성하는데, 시각 편향적 감각이 얼마나 큰 영향을 미쳤는지를 매클루언의 주장을 중심으로 살펴본다. 대조적으로 후각은 오랫동안 축소된 감각으로 주관적인 취향이나 기억 차원에서 제한적으로 논의되어 왔다. 그러나 포스트인간중심주의를 지향하기 위한 방편으로서 후각에 더 주목할 필요가 있다. 첫째, 시각은 나와 너의 거리를 두는 개별 주체성을 북돋지만, 후각은 서로의 일부를 물리적으로 나누는 호흡과 연동되어 있다. 즉 냄새 맡기는 함께 환경을 구성하고 같은 환경적 조건에 놓인 공동체적 행위다. 둘째, 냄새는 다른 감각과 달리 근원을 시각적으로 확인할 수 없으며, 바람의 흐름에 따라 유동적이며 개인의 편차에 따라 다르게 경험된다. 이러한 후각적 경험은 인식 없이도 이루어지는 느낌에 대체적으로 부합한다. 냄새맡기는, 개념을 통해 동질화하거나 인식론적 앎으로 환원될 수 없는 개별적인 존재로서의 행위다. 그것은 인간의 특성을 수직적 위계의 특별함이 아닌 무수한 존재자들 중에 하나의 특수성으로 다루기 위한 포스트인간중심주의의 방향성과 결부되어 있다. 이런 맥락에서, 본 연구는 이러한 동시대적 담론에서 ‘우리’라는 관용어를 재고하고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper addresses the collective qualities of olfactory sense through the discourse of ‘feeling.’ It begins with a criticism of Antropocentristic tradition and its relation to Ocularcentrism across human history, referencing Marshall Mcluhan. It constitutes the vision and human-biased culture and infrastructures that led to the crisis of Anthropocene. Also I reference Steven Shaviro’s reconceptualization of feeling which was initially coined by Alfred N. Whitehead. Next, I analyze and compare both the olfactory art performances of Angela Ellsworth and Sissel Tolas, to the indigenous smell-oriented culture of Onge people who lived on the Andaman Island. The sense of smell has been dismissed or reduced especially since the beginning of the modern era but it deserves more scholarly attention. Whether we recognize it or not, we are constantly receiving smells from our surroundings through our breath. Smell also connects us to others through the collective olfactory elements that we exchange, suggesting an olfactory community with shared environmental conditions. By emphasizing smell, the paper ultimately aims to reestablish the meaning of “we” as one that rejects ‘-centrism’ and admits the interconnectedness, and maintains the diverse collective.
