Abstract
This paper examines the role of rhyme in vernacular poetry, with particular attention to its historical limitations and recent innovations. Korean, unlike Chinese, has long been considered ill-suited to syllabic meter, tonal regulation, and rhyme schemes. In contrast, Japan developed kanwa renku (漢和聯句)—a hybrid form of Chinese–Japanese linked verse—to demonstrate that wago (和句, native Japanese poetic lines) could accommodate rhyme by employing kundoku (Japanese-style readings of Chinese characters). This effort, while at times strained, aimed to integrate waka and Chinese poetry on equal terms. In the modern era, Masaoka Shiki and Kim Eok argued that poetry should not be confined to free verse and proposed rhymed, fixed-form verse as a countermeasure. However, simple end-rhyme schemes failed to gain critical legitimacy, particularly when they conflicted with the internal rhythms of free verse. The emergence of rap music in the late twentieth century revived interest in rhyme through complex and creative rhyming techniques that extended beyond traditional forms. Artists such as King Ghidorah in Japan and Verbal Jint in Korea pioneered new approaches that significantly expanded the expressive potential of vernacular rhythm. This paper situates contemporary rhyme practices in Japanese and Korean rap within the broader poetic tradition, arguing that they represent a meaningful evolution of the aesthetic concerns once raised by Shiki and Kim. These developments warrant critical reevaluation in the context of poetic history.
