Abstract

This study critically examines “appreciation,”—a core concept in literature education—and proposes a reconceptualization of appreciation as a perception-centered act grounded in the subject’s sensory experience. In the current literature education, appreciation is primarily framed as an act of recognizing and evaluating the aesthetic properties of a text, thereby rendering learners’ experiential and affective responses secondary or peripheral. Based on the theoretical framework of Aisthetik (the aesthetics of perception), this study redefines appreciation as an experiential act of self-sensing (sich-spüren) centered on the subject. Self-sensing refers to the act in which the subject presupposes a connection with an object and delicately perceives their own existence while simultaneously perceiving the co-presence of the object. Based on this perspective, appreciation can be restructured as an affective and receptive act of the subject. To examine this theoretical proposition, this study analyzes middle-school students’ responses to the classical Korean poem Ganghosasiga. A comparative analysis of traditional response writing and self-sensing-based activities revealed that the latter encouraged learners to express their sensory flows based on emotions, memory, and imagination, thus suggesting an alternative method for literary appreciation. This study ultimately proposes that appreciation may be understood not as a judgment about the object (i.e., the text) but as a perceptual and embodied flow centered on the subject, thereby offering both theoretical and practical implications for literature education.
