Abstract

This study examines the civil engineering techniques reflected in the construction of ancient earthen fortifications, focusing on water control and wall stability. Since earth-en fortifications were built primarily with soil, the cohesion and durability of their fill lay- ers were strongly affected by water infiltration, water retention, inadequate drainage, and repeated wetting and drying. Therefore, ancient earthen fortification construction should not be understood simply as the process of placing and compacting soil to achieve the re- quired height and scale, but as a set of construction practices that had different functional relationships with water-related processes and structural stability. To this end, this study first defines the concept of civil engineering techniques and establishes an analytical perspective. It then examines major techniques applied to ancient earthen fortifications, including the selection, blending, and compaction of fill materials, the possible use of lime for material improvement, the leaf-laying technique, timber rein- forcement, and surface finishing. The results show that the selection and compaction of fill materials served as basic processes for regulating pore structure and moisture conditions within the fill layers. The possible use of lime is examined as a material-improvement tech- nique that could have enhanced the cohesion and water resistance of fill materials. The leaf-laying technique may have helped distribute loads and reduce water stagnation in the foundation, while timber reinforcement may have contributed to wall stability by strength- ening the bonding of fill layers and reducing structural deformation. Surface finishing may have protected the inner fill layers by reducing direct water infiltration and surface erosion. In this respect, the civil engineering techniques reflected in ancient earthen fortification construction should not be understood merely as a collection of individual methods; rather, their combined functions can be understood as a complex configuration operating across the wall surface, body, foundation, and construction process. This study proposes a prelim- inary analytical framework for reinterpreting ancient earthen fortification construction by connecting archaeologically identified features with geotechnical, hydraulic, and structural principles.
