Abstract

This study examines the use of black shale stone tools during the Bronze Age in the Hoseo region through a survey of lithic raw material environments and an analysis of excavated materials. In this study, black shale is defined as an archaeological category including fine-grained, platy lithic materials in black, dark gray, blackish gray, or carbona- ceous tones. The survey shows that black shale is mainly distributed in the Daedong Supergroup around Boryeong, with smaller outcrops in the Dangjin, Hongseong, and Iksan areas. It was also confirmed that black shale could be collected not only from primary outcrops but also from streams originating from or passing through these source areas. Among 6,344 Bronze Age stone tools analyzed, 3,204 were made of black shale, ac- counting for 50.5% of the assemblage. However, black shale was not used equally for all tool types. Its proportion was especially high among stone arrowheads and stone daggers, suggesting selective use for tools that required fine texture and platy fracture. Chronolog- ically, the overall proportion increased in the Middle Bronze Age, but stone daggers and stone knives decreased, indicating a reorganization of use by tool type. Spatially, high proportions were observed in the western coastal area and the Sap- gyocheon River basin, while the Geum River basin showed relatively low proportions. Distance analysis shows that black shale tools and production-related materials were con- centrated within 10 km of the potential procurement areas. This suggests that raw material procurement and production were mainly carried out near source areas or settlements with high accessibility to them. In contrast, finished tools were also found beyond this zone, implying that processed or finished tools circulated through movement, exchange, or in- ter-settlement networks.
