Abstract

This study investigates the origin and development of circular-plan dwellings in the Gaya region by examining dwelling structures and jjokgudeul(flue-heated facilities). The results indicate that the origin of Gaya circular-plan dwellings can be traced to the Ogok- ri–type dwellings of the Songguk-ri cultural tradition during the Late Bronze Age. The continuity of this dwelling tradition until the early fifth century suggests the long-term per- sistence of a common residential culture in Gaya society. The development of jjokgudeul is examined through three stages: the initial stage, the hiatus period, and the flourishing stage. The earliest examples show close affinities with the Sejuk-ri–Yeonhwabo culture of the northwestern Korean Peninsula. After a chronological hiatus, jjokgudeul became widespread in the Nam River basin from the late third century onward. Rather than interpreting this development solely as external transmission or inde- pendent emergence, this study suggests that the later forms represent a transformation of earlier heating principles through adaptation to changing settlement locations and environ- mental conditions. Although circular-plan dwellings continued in both western and eastern Gyeong- sangnam-do until the early fifth century, regional differences in internal facilities and con- struction methods indicate selective adaptation within a shared dwelling tradition. These findings demonstrate that the circular-plan dwelling tradition, originating in the Late Bronze Age, became the representative residential form of Gaya society.
