Abstract
This study aims to examine the spatio-temporal aspects of large pottery vessels (大壺, daeho), a type of large pottery storage container from the Hanseong period of Baekje, by establishing their sub-pottery type classification, typological classification, and chronolo- gy. Large pottery vessels are defined as beaten pottery jars with a vessel height of approxi- mately 36 cm or more. Based on intact examples, they are classified into three sub-pottery types: round-bodied, long-bodied, and shouldered. Subsequently, a typological classifi- cation was conducted based on the relative height of the maximum body diameter neck constriction, and base form, and the chronology was established by analyzing associated artifacts and excavated archaeological features. The results show that round-bodied large pottery vessels were universally used throughout the central region, transitioning from A1a and A1b types in Proto-Three King- doms Period 3 to A2b and A2c types in Hanseong Periods 1-2. Long-bodied large pottery vessels emerged during Hanseong Periods 3-4; although they existed for a relatively short period, they are notable for their strong association with flask-shaped pits, primarily within the Mahan cultural sphere. In contrast, shouldered large pottery vessels are predominantly found in the Hanseong region, demonstrating a morphological shift from the C1 type in Proto-Three Kingdoms Period 3 to the C2 type in Hanseong Periods 3-4. Over time, the distribution of large pottery vessels gradually became concentrated in the southern Gyeonggi area. Additionally, the nature of the excavated features diversified from exclusively dwellings to include various contexts such as both dwellings and pits. This trend appears to reflect the socioeconomic structure of the period, including population concentration and settlement stratification. Furthermore, morphological differences based on functionality are evident: large pottery vessels excavated from dwellings feature wide mouth diameters for easier access to contents, whereas those recovered from storage pits were manufactured with narrow mouth diameters optimized for sealing.
