Abstract
As activities, mediated by platforms in daily life as well as labor market, rapidly increase and spread world-widely, various controversies have been raised over the autonomy and subordination implied in platform labor. This duality of platform labor is due to the characteristics of platform labor: on the one hand, autonomy, independently located outside the platform company without a direct contractual relationship, and subordination, with technical labor control through digital algorithms operated by the platform. This paper examines the process in which existing wage labor, self-employed labor, and ‘free labor’ that was not previously considered as capitalist labor are transforming into platform labor, and explores the control process and characteristics of platform labor through platform algorithms. Furthermore, in order to more theoretically understand the autonomy and subordination of platform labor, this paper discusses the algorithmic control of platforms over labor and everyday life in relation to Foucault’s concept of ‘governmentality’ and Spinoza’s concept of ‘affect’ and ‘desire.’ In addition, it critically examines the autonomy and subordination of platform labor through the Marxist concept of ‘subsumption of labor’ that Hardt and Negri seek to highlight and the concept of ‘universal alienation’ suggested by Harvey. In conclusion, it emphasizes that the autonomy of platform labor is fictitious but cannot be completely denied, and that it is necessary to foster the agency and subjectivation of resistance that would realize the true autonomy inherent in it, that is, the possibility of dealienation and positive freedom.
