Abstract

This paper analyzes how algorithmic control in platform labor performs substantive employer functions throughout the labor process and calls for redefining both the criteria and concept of employer status. Although platform companies claim to be neutral intermediaries, their algorithms organize and control work in real time through automated task allocation, evaluation, remuneration, and disciplinary systems. Such algorithmic management operates as a digitalized form of command and supervision and should be recognized as a key factor in determining employer status. To address the limits of the traditional single-employer paradigm, the study draws on the U.S. joint employer doctrine and Prassl’s multi-functional concept of the employer, proposing a framework that attributes employer responsibility to multiple entities that collectively exercise control within platform-based labor structures.
