Abstract

This study investigates how scholars of the Joseon dynasty interpreted and responded to the absence of a clear regulation in Zhuzi Jiali (朱子家禮) concerning the termination point of sangsiggok (上食哭), the wailing performed during daily morning and evening offerings (sangsik, 上食) to the ancestral spirit. Toegye Yi Hwang, drawing on the ritual principle that expressions of grief should gradually diminish over time (漸殺) and specific textual grounds in Zhuzi Jiali, argued that sangsiggok should cease after the small mourning rite (小祥). In contrast, scholars of the Giho school, including Gubong Song Ik-pil and Sagye Kim Jang-saeng, maintained that as long as sangsik continues, sangsiggok must not be omitted. They criticized Toegye's interpretation and gradually expanded their own evidential basis across generations. Meanwhile, within the Yeongnam school, differing views emerged. Scholars such as Hangang Jeong Gu, Misu Heo Mok, and Garam Yi Hyeon-il supported Toegye's position, while others-Yeoheon Jang Hyeon-gwang, Seongho Yi Ik, and Dongam Yu Jang-won-argued for the continuation of sangsiggok beyond the small mourning period. These intra-lineage divergences demonstrate that Joseon ritual learning was not a singular, linearly inherited tradition, but a field in which multiple interpretations coexisted. By analyzing scholarly debates surrounding this particular case of interpretive ambiguity, this paper reveals that ritual learning in Joseon was a dynamic and continuously negotiated scholarly practice.
