Abstract

This paper attempts to describe a new system of textual analysis of yiqtol and weqatal in Biblical Hebrew verbal system(BHVS). What distinguishes it from previous studies is that the intention is not on the grammatical concepts of tense and aspect but that of modality. I am also agreed significance of tense and aspect in BHVS. However, the reason I have focused on modality is that modality is a key device to explain functions of yiqtol and weqatal in BHVS. In general linguistics, modality system can be illustrated by two different categories: deontic and epistemic modality. Epistemic modality is concerned with the speaker’s attitude to factual status of the proposition. By contrast, deontic modality relates to the speaker’s internal ability or personal activity. In this respect, recently some Biblical Hebrew linguists suggest that deontic modality is expressed by the verbal forms of yiqtol and weqatal. In order to set this study, however, another linguistic device is primarily necessary. That is speech act theory which focuses on the character of actions of performative utterances. Speech act theory has its roots in J.A. Austin’s and J. Searle’s philosophy of language. In speech act theory all utterances are performative in nature. According to Austin, there are three distinctive component acts: locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. In this category, a fundamental idea is that in utterances speaker makes his intention as propositional contents with a certain illocutionary force. According to Searle, individual utterances have primary illocutionary points of language use, such as assertive, commissive, directive, expressive, and declarative. So, my hypothesis is that these illocutionary acts are deeply connected with a grammatical concept of modality in Biblical Hebrew. As I mentioned above, the main function of yiqtol and weqatal verbs in BHVS is to describe the character of modality. On this basis, we can interpret the speaker’s intention and textual function of yiqtol and weqatal verbs in Biblical Hebrew.
