Abstract

Utubora Mkulima, a novel written by Shaaban Robert who led the emergence of Swahili contemporary literature, is considered to be a work close to Western modern novel in terms of form and content, but the characteristic features of the African novel are observed. In the early 20th century, the novel genre was unfamiliar to East African readers, as it was not part of Swahili classical literature. By using proverbs in the novel, Shaaban Robert innovatively incorporates proverbs throughout the novel, crafting a unique style distinct from that of Western novels. African writers, including Shaaban, did not merely adopt Western literary forms; instead, they preserved and integrated African oral traditions into modern literature, establishing a distinctive African narrative form. Utubora Mkulima deals with themes such as love, marriage and wealth through the relationship of four young people, with the embedded proverbs accentuating these themes. Shaaban is using proverbs familiar to Swahili people to reflect Swahili society's perspective on the themes in this novel. In addition, the author provides Utubora as an ideal human being and emphasizes the features of this character in portraying him through proverbs. Finally, Shaaban helps the reader understand the narrative structure of this novel by using proverbs as narrative techniques, such as foreshadowing, introducing conflict and enriching the description of various situations.
