Abstract

Kourouma relies on the Western literary style of fiction, but also seeks to localize the genre by mixing a wide variety of traditional African literary forms. It is noteworthy that the traditional African style is the oral style. Various oral forms, such as African epic poems, legends, contes, songs, and proverbs, are spread throughout the entire Kourouma’s novel. In other words, Kourouma’s novel is a transformation of traditional African oral genres into Western novels, which are written genres. This study aims to focus on proverbs among these oral genres. This is because, first of all, proverbs exist in Kourouma’s novels the most than any other oral genre. The reason why proverbs are most often found in Kourouma’s novels may be natural. Legends, epic poems, and contes are a kind of genre of narrative, but proverbs are short sentences that can be easily inserted anywhere in the work. Proverbs are also the most compressed reflection of society’s customs and thinking, albeit in a short form. In addition to these general arguments, proverbs take an important place in Kourouma’s novels because they are involved in the narrative and structure of the novel, forming the fundamental axis of the story. In particular, what we will emphasize here is to look at how the proverbs relate to the theme, message, or structure of Kourouma’s novel. Through this work, we will be able to see the literary value of proverbs in Kourouma’s novels. Lastly, we would like to examine the reinterpretation of proverbs, which are the products of past traditions, in Kourouma’s novels, according to modern times. Proverbs serve to enlighten the tragic reality of Africa. Kourouma uses proverbs, a product of past traditions, to tell the present. Proverbs eventually become a living language, not a word of the past, and face the present.
