Abstract
This study aims to examine the reason why, in spite of Korea’s current hype concerning sexual violence against girls, mothers with sons in elementary school have for the most part very little fear regarding the possibility that their child may be the victim or aggressor of sexual violence, and why this tendency may be problematic. The media’s reports on sexual violence cases are centered on girl victims, and the mothers of elementary school boys do not recognize the possibility of sexual violence as their reality. Fear that their child may become an aggressor is also absent: this appears to be because they do not consider their child to be sexual, and because the fact that girls take the leading role in boy-girl relationships during the upper grades of elementary school makes it difficult for parents be specifically anxious of their son becoming a sexual violence aggressor or victim. Overall, parents to not fully sympathize with the need to teach children in the upper grades of elementary school about sexual subjects, and the fact that sexual violence fear is exclusively focused on girls is strengthening the tendency to blame girls for their attire and the myth of boys’ unstoppable sexual urges.
