Abstract
This study examined school principals’ digital leadership competencies amid rapid digital transformation in education and explored strategies to enhance them. Surveys from 452 elementary and secondary school principals were analyzed by comparing the perceived importance and actual performance of these competencies, with priorities identified using Borich’s Needs Analysis and the Locus for Focus analysis. Results showed that principals recognized the high importance of digital leadership but reported low performance levels, highlighting a significant perception-practice gap. Elementary principals showed strong needs in “Community Engagement,” “Performance Analysis and Improvement,” “Enhanced Communication,” and “Vision Setting and Sharing.” Locus for Focus analysis identified “Creating a Universal Learning Environment,” “Integrating Educational Technology,” “Safety and Security,” “Ethical Use,” and “Protection and Support Systems” as primary improvement areas. In contrast, secondary principals prioritized “Vision Setting and Sharing,” “Performance Analysis and Improvement,” “Community Engagement,” and “Data-Based Strategy Development,” with Locus for Focus analysis emphasizing “Vision Setting and Sharing,” “Creating a Universal Educational Environment,” “Supporting Personalized Learning,” and “Safety and Security.” These findings underscore that principals’ digital leadership should extend beyond technology adoption to strategic guidance that reshapes school vision and culture. By recommending tailored competency-development programs and policy supports differentiated by school level, this study provides directions for enhancing principals’ digital leadership.
