Abstract

This study aims to provide a foundation for promoting the mental health of young social workers by examining the risk and protective factors associated with depression. Using data from 941 individuals aged 19 to 34, drawn from the 2023 Statistical Yearbook of Social Workers, the analysis produced the following key findings. First, both physical health state and psychological–emotional health state were inversely associated with depression. In particular, psychological– emotional health state emerged as a consistent and significant predictor across all models. Second, job stress, workplace violence, and client-related violence were identified as risk factors that heightened depression among young social workers. Third, work–life balance, job satisfaction, and peer relationship satisfaction served as protective factors that mitigated depressive symptoms. Based on these results, practical and policy alternatives for young social workers were discussed and suggested, such as introducing mental health promotion programs, strengthening protective measures, and implementing work-life balance systems.
