Abstract
This study aimed to identify the types of job characteristics among the self-employed and to examine how these latent groups affect work–family conflict (WFC). Data were drawn from the 7th Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS) conducted in 2023 by the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was employed to classify job characteristic types, and multiple regression analysis was used to test their effects on WFC. The analysis identified three distinct profiles: the “Time-autonomous type” (45.4%), characterized by relatively low job demands but high work-time flexibility; the “high-resource type” (37.7%), with abundant job resources; and the “high demand - low resource type” (16.9%), marked by high job demands and limited resources. Gender, health status, care demands, and type of self-employment were significantly associated with class membership. Women were more likely to belong to the timeautonomous type, while solo self-employed workers were less likely to be classified as the highresource type. Regression results showed that the high-resource type experienced the highest level of WFC, suggesting that job resources such as autonomy and flexibility may blur the boundaries between work and family, thereby intensifying conflict. In addition, gender, income, care demands, and type of self-employment were found to be important predictors of WFC. Notably, interaction analysis revealed that WFC was most pronounced when the high demand - low resource type was combined with solo self-employment. Based on these findings, this study highlights policy implications including extending coverage and effectiveness of work–family reconciliation policies, improving childcare services tailored to the characteristics of the selfemployed, and addressing the needs of solo self-employed workers through targeted policy support.
