Abstract
In the context of assisting teachers, interest in AI tutors has significantly increased. With the growing popularity of virtual spaces such as the metaverse, digital humans are becoming popular across various media platforms. Digital humans can also be utilized in the field of education by integrating them with AI tutors that can perform the role of teachers (assistants) in virtual spaces. In this study, a needs analysis targeting elementary, middle, and high school teachers was conducted to explore the educational potential of digital human-based AI tutors. A total of 96 elementary school teachers, 85 middle school teachers, and 87 high school teachers participated in this study. The questionnaire included items related to the role of AI tutors, visualization methods reflecting digital human characteristics, utilization and media access methods, teaching and learning contexts—such as appropriate subjects and utilization times—and concerns regarding their implementation. The results showed differences in roles at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The results further revealed differences in the needs for characteristics and utilization methods by role. For instance, the role of teaching-learning support received the highest preference; however, there were differences in specific support roles and subjects by school level. In terms of gender and age, women were preferred more than men, and the 20–30 age group was mainly preferred. This study is significant as it provides insights into design considerations necessary to enhance the usability of digital human-based AI tutors in assisting teachers, based on educators’ opinions within school settings.
