Abstract

This study aims to explore elementary school teachers’ perceptions of generative artificial intelligence and to analyze their instructional needs, with the ultimate goal of identifying practical support strategies for elementary education in the AI era. To this end, a survey was conducted with 351 elementary teachers in Korea, focusing on their perceptions, levels of utilization, and specific needs related to the use of generative AI. The data were comprehensively analyzed using t-tests, Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA), Borich needs assessment, and the Locus for Focus model, with an emphasis on the discrepancy between perceived importance and actual utilization. The findings revealed that, for the overall teacher group, the highest-priority needs were: understanding students’ learning levels, organizing instructional content, and providing feedback through processes that promote individualized instruction, interaction, and self-directed learning. These results suggest that generative AI should not be regarded merely as a technical tool, but rather as a means to support and complement teachers’ professional judgment throughout the entire teaching–learning process. Furthermore, differences emerged depending on teachers’ levels of awareness: those with high awareness emphasized innovative instructional applications such as supporting self-directed learning, whereas those with lower awareness showed stronger needs for basic instructional support functions, such as understanding learners and organizing materials. Overall, the results indicate that the use of generative AI in classrooms must move beyond simple technology dissemination and be designed as a tailored support system that reflects teacher characteristics and instructional contexts. Such a system should enhance AI literacy and be grounded in teachers’ professional expertise to lead to genuine instructional innovation.
