Abstract

The languages of the Altaic peoples who lived scattered around China belonged to the Altaic language family with the agglutinative grammatical structure, and were classified as agglutinative languages. In the early historic eras, the languages were partially recorded in Chinese, which was the most powerful writing system in the East Asia region. However, it was difficult to record Altaic languages in Chinese characters which were ideographs created to record Chinese, an isolating language, and thus it caused a lot of discomfort. Therefore, the Altaic peoples began to record their own languages by creating new scripts different from Chinese characters. A new phonetic alphabet was first created by King Srong-btsan sgam-po of Tŭfan(吐蕃) Kingdom in the mid-seventh century under the influence of Sanskrit characters(梵字). He made Thon mi Anu'ibu to create 30 Tibetan(西藏) characters, and since they were very scientifically designed phonetic symbols, languages of other ethnic groups during the period were also written in the script, and it is the Tibetan syllabic writing system still used today. The Tibetan(西藏) script was changed into the letters which could transcribe all the languages of Yuan Empire and Chinese characters, and these letters are referred to as the Phags-pa script. Khubilai Khan, who separated only China from Chingiz Khan’s vast Mongolian empire and established a new nation called Yuan, made h̦P’ags-pa Lama of Tŭfan(吐蕃) to create the Phags-pa script employing a phonetic alphabet such as Tibetan characters, and established the letters as the national script of Yuan Empire. On the basis of Chinese Phonology, consonant letters for 36 onsets were created, and 7 vowel letters were created according to the vowel system of the Mongolian language of the period. Consequently, 43 phonemic symbols in total were created, but only 41 of them were actually used. Hangul was also established as a phonetic alphabet, like the Phags-pa script. Initially, 28 characters were made in order to represent Korean pronunciation of Chinese characters, that is, the Sino-Korean Pronunciation. However, in order to represent the Sino-Korean pronunciation based on Tongguk-jeongun, 27 letters were created as symbols for onsets, that is, initial consonantal letters, and eventually, 32 letters for consonant phonemes were made to represent the Chinese Pronunciation of Chinese characters. When 11 middle vocalic letters are added to them, they are 43 letters in total, and thus equal the Phags-pa script discussed previously in the number.
