Abstract
This study based on Appraisal Theory analyzes the evaluative discourse and diachronic shifts observed in the headlines of British and American media reporting on Korean films awarded at the four major international film festivals. The dataset comprises 100 headlines published between 1987 and 2022, covering a total of 17 Korean films. The appraisal words appearing in these headlines were categorized into three types according to their evaluative focus: Reaction, Composition, and Valuation. The results revealed a clear diachronic pattern. Headlines from 1987 to 2012 frequently employed negative reaction-type lexis such as “sicko” and “controversy”, highlighting shock, discomfort, and moral unease. In contrast, headlines after 2019 increasingly incorporated positive valuation-type expressions such as “historic” and “first”, emphasizing cultural significance, national achievement, and institutional recognition. These findings demonstrate that Appraisal Theory can be effectively applied to media discourse analysis reflecting temporal change. Moreover, by expanding Martin and White’s(2005) framework, this study subdivides the Valuation category into Historic–Cultural Value, National Pride, and Institutional Legitimacy, providing a more refined analytical tool for explaining how media discourse constructs the cultural and ideological value of national cinema over time. Furthermore, Appraisal Theory offers a new methodological and analytical perspective for exploring how the status of Korean cinema has evolved in global media discourse across different historical periods.
