Abstract
This paper tries to show whether or not virtue and autonomy are compatible and what is the relationship between the two to be seen. The topic is focused upon virtue and autonomy, as seen as educational aims, the arguments of which have been separately taken before but, I rightly think, should be both taken seriously as a compatible one. Initially the autonomy claim as an educational aim derived from virtue-based ethics and also, despite its origin, has been regarded as independently asserted of the communitarian tones such as the communitarian life and the concept of self embedded in a particular community. However, this ironically provides us with the mile stone for us to more closely examine the crucial point of virtue ethics. The paper has examine two ethical theories for their compatibility just as the sense of individuality can be compatible with that of community, and thus concludes that the aims of moral education should be established as an integrated form of the two contrasting theories of ethics, virtue and deontic ones.
