동시대에 자주 논의되는 도덕교육적 입장들 중의 하나인 도덕교육에 대한 덕접근은 덕윤리에 토대를 둔 도덕교육으로 정의됨으로써 하나의 도덕교육이론으로서의 차별성과 체계성을 확보할 수 있다. 본 연구는 도덕교육에 대한 덕접근이 직면하는 주요 쟁점들을 비판적으로 검토함으로써 도덕교육에 대한 덕접근이 하나의 도덕교육이론으로 유의미한 기여를 하기위해 나아가야할 방향을 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 먼저 인격특질뿐만 아니라 상황이 행위수행에 주요 변수가 되며 행위자판단으로 환원 혹은 대체될 수 없는 행위판단이 있다는 점에서 도덕교육에 대한 덕접근은 유덕한 인격을 기르는 것뿐만 아니라 올바른 행위를 하도록 교육하는 것을 포함해야한다. 또한 도덕교육에 대한 덕접근이 취하는 덕목론적 입장이 상대주의에 연루되는 것을 피하기 어렵기 때문에 덕접근은 덕목의 구체적인 실천방안을 습득시키는 것뿐만 아니라 덕목의 의미를 숙고하고 검토할 수 있는 안목을 길러주는 것을 포함해야한다. 따라서 도덕교육에 대한 덕접근은 하나의 독자적인 도덕교육이론으로보다는 원리적 접근과의 통합을 통해 직면하는 과제를 해결해감으로써 유의미한 도덕교육이론이 될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Issues and Tasks in the Virtue Approach to Moral Education The virtue approach to moral education as one of contemporary moral education theories has to be defined as the moral education based on virtue ethics so that it can be differentiated and systematized as a theory of moral education. The purpose of this study is to investigate main issues of the virtue approach and then to show how this approach can resolve its problems. First of all, the virtue approach should aim to encourage right actions as well as to cultivate virtuous character since both character traits and circumstances are crucial variables in doing an action and there are some action judgments which can neither be reduced to nor replaced by agent judgments. Also, the virtue approach should not merely enable children to acquire virtuous habits but also to critically judge the meanings of virtues themselves so as not to be involved in relativism. The virtue approach to moral education can find a way to do such things by integrating the principle approach into itself.
