본 연구는 『대승기신론』이 제시하는 연기 사상과 관계성 개념을 인성교육의 이론적 기초로 고찰하고 그 교육적 함의를 탐구하는 데 목적이 있다. 오늘날 4차 산업혁명과 초연결 사회는 인간 존재를 관계성 속에서 규정짓는 현상을 가속화시키고 있으며, 이에 따라 인성을 관계성의 차원에서 재조명할 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 『대승기신론』은 초기불교의 연기법을 심화·확장한 진여연기설을 통해 인간 마음의 본래 청정성과 무명에 의해 발생하는 번뇌의 과정을 설명한다. 특히 일심이문(一心二門)과 여래장(如來藏) 사상은 모든 인간이 본래 청정한 불성을 지니고 있음을 강조하며, 이는 인성교육이 추구하는 이상적 인간상과 상통한다. 본 연구는 『대승기신론』에서 제시하는 염법연기와 정법연기의 구조를 분석하여, 자기와의 관계성을 통한 내적 깨달음으로써 지혜와 타인과의 관계성을 통한 자비의 실천이 인성 회복의 핵심임을 밝힌다. 이를 통해 인성교육은 단순한 규범 주입이 아닌, 관계성을 자각하고 실천함으로써 자기 이해와 타자 배려를 아우르는 교육이어야 함을 제시한다. 결국 『대승기신론』의 관계성 이해는 오늘날 인성교육 담론에서 요구되는 철학적 기반을 제공하며, 교육 현장에서의 실천적 대안으로 기능할 수 있음을 보여준다.
Abstract
This study examines the doctrinal framework of dependent origination and the concept of relationship in the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna (大乘起信論), aiming to assess their significance as a theoretical foundation for character education. In the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and hyperconnectivity, human existence is increasingly shaped by relationships, which requires a renewed understanding of character within this relational dimension. The Awakening of Faith develops the early Buddhist doctrine of dependent origination through the theory of “Tathatā-pratītya- samutpāda (眞如緣起),” explaining both the original purity of the human mind and the process by which delusion arises from ignorance. The doctrines of “The Doctrine of One Mind with Two Aspects (一心二門)” and tathāgatagarbha (如來藏) both emphasize that all human beings inherently possess a pure Buddha-nature, a view consistent with the aims of character education. By analyzing the structures of deluded dependent origination and pure dependent origination, this study argues that wisdom, understood as inner enlightenment through one’s relationship with oneself, and compassionate practice in relationships with others, form the core of character restoration. Therefore, character education should move beyond normative inculcation and instead encourage awareness and practice of relationships that integrate self-understanding and consideration for others. The Awakening of Faith’s understanding of relationship provides a philosophical foundation for contemporary discussions on character education and offers practical alternatives for educational practice.
