Abstract

This study critically examines the limitations of current character education and proposes a new direction through its reconceptualization. Moving beyond the traditional additive model—where character is defined as a sum of virtues or competencies—it introduces a “chemical” perspective that views human existence as fundamentally relational. Drawing on Eastern philosophies, including Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, alongside Western traditions such as existentialism, dialogical philosophy, and the ethics of care, this research redefines character as a relational essence. Within this framework, character emerges not merely through individual moral actions but through dynamic, multilayered relationships with the self, others, community, and nature. This relational understanding positions character as an existential orientation shaped in context, rather than a static set of traits. Based on this reconceptualization, the study offers a theoretical foundation for character education that emphasizes inner reflection and relational cultivation. It also suggests practical directions and educational criteria to support a more holistic and context-sensitive approach to character development.
