초록

본 논문은 그동안 미드의 이론에서 상대적으로 등한시되어 왔던 그의 사회이론에 관한 분석과 해명을 목표로 한다. 사회의 도덕적 진보가 가능하며, 개인과 사회는 상호 구성의 관계 속에서 함께 진화한다는 것, 다시 말해 기능적으로나 도덕적으로나 더 고차원으로 발전한 사회가 더 성숙한 자기의식적 자아를 가진 개인을 산출하는 조건이 되고 또 역으로 인격적으로 더 발달한 개별 자아, 즉 더 포괄적으로 통합되어 있으면서도 독창성과 독특성을 지닌 개인들이 사회 진화를 이끄는 궁극적인 주체가 된다는 것이 미드의 근본 신념이다. 우리는 미드가 이 근본 신념을 그리고 이로부터 도출되는 개인과 사회에 관한 이상들을 어떤 논변을 통해 근거 짓는지 살펴볼 것이다. 이를 위해 우선 제2장에서는 미드의 자아론에서 도덕의식의 형성과 발달에 관한 논의를 살펴볼 것이다. 미드에게서 도덕이론과 사회 개혁론은 서로를 성립 조건으로서 전제한다. 미드의 도덕적 자아에 관한 이론을 개체 발생론적 관점에서 고찰하는 이 장에서는 도덕의 사회적 규정성과 해방적 초월성, 개인의 사회화와 개체화, 통합이론과 갈등이론이 어떻게 서로 결합되어 있는지를 해명할 것이다. 다음으로 제3장에서는 미드의 사회 개혁론을 집중적으로 분석할 것이다. 이 장에서는 미드의 사회이론에서 사회 개혁의 동인과 기제가 무엇인지 그리고 개인과 사회의 변증법 속에서 양자는 어떤 이상을 향해 진화하는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 급진적 사회 개혁가로서의 미드의 모습이 부각될 것이다. 이런 사회 개혁론에 관한 고찰은 동시에 미드의 도덕적 자아론을 종족 발생론적 관점에서 보완하는 논의로 간주될 수 있을 것이다. 마지막으로 제3장에서는 미드의 사회이론이 지닌 의의와 그 한계점들을 전반적으로 논할 것이다.

Abstract

This article aims at analyzing and elucidating the social theory of G. H. Mead. It is his fundamental belief that the moral progress of society is possible, and that the individual and the society evolve together in a mutual relationship. We will see how Mead argumentatively founds this fundamental belief and the ideals of individual and society derived from it. In Chapter 2, we will discuss the formation and development of moral consciousness in Mead’s theory of the self. In this chapter, we will elucidate how the social regulation and the liberative transcendence of morals, the socialization and the individualization of individuals, integration theory and conflict theory are combined with each other. In Chapter 3, we will focus on Mead’s theory of social reform. In this chapter, we will investigate what the momentum and mechanism of social reform is, and to what kind of ideal they evolve in the dialectics of individuals and society. Through this inquiry, the appearance of Mead as a radical social reformer will be pointed up. Finally, Chapter 3 discusses the significances and limitations of Mead’s social theory in general.
