물질문명이 발달함에 따라 정신적 가치가 하락하는 이 세대에서 삶과 생명의 가치 교육의 필요성이 절실하다. 삶의 소중함과 의미를 강화하기 위한 주제는 역설적이게도 죽음교육이라 할 수 있다. 카우텐바움은 죽음학을 ‘죽음에 내재된 생명학’으로 정의함으로서 진정성있는 삶의 연구가 바로 죽음학이라는 것을 말하고 있다. 현대사회는 언젠가부터 죽음에 대해 말하지 않고 있고, 이는 죽음에 대한 잘못된 이해로 이끌며 삶의 의미와 가치를 하락시키고 있다. 본 소고에서는 이러한 죽음교육을 보다 쉽게 시행되도록 돕기 위해 음악 활용을 제안한다. 음악은 정서적 기능을 제공하기에 다루기 어려운 주제도 음악을 통해 이야기할 때 쉽게 수용될 수 있다. 음악의 정서적 영향에 대한 심리학적 연구는 청자의 신경안정, 스트레스 완화, 사회적 관계 향상 등, 매우 긍정적인 결과들을 보고해오고 있다. 본 소고에서는 리스트의 교향시 <전주곡>을 통해 죽음교육의 의의를 논의한다. 삶이란 죽음에의 전주곡이라고 언급한 라마르틴의 시에 따라 인생의 여정을 노래하는 교향시를 통해 카우텐바움의 “죽음에 내재된 생명학‘을 고찰하고자 하는 것이다. 따라서 죽음교육에서의 음악 활용은 삶 또는 죽음을 주제로 하는 실제 음악작품을 이해하고 면밀히 감상하면서 청자의 정서 순화 및 감정이입을 도울 뿐만 아니라 죽음을 바라보는 감정적 상처와 두려움을 치유함으로서 삶을 진정성 있고 포용력있게 바라 볼 수 있도록 도울 수 있다.
Abstract
As material civilization advances, the need for education on the value of life and existence becomes increasingly urgent in this era where spiritual values are declining. Paradoxically, the theme that strengthens the preciousness and meaning of life can be described as death education. Kastenbaum defines thanatology as “the study of life inherent in death,” emphasizing that the genuine exploration of life is essentially a study of death. Modern society has, at some point, stopped talking about death, leading to isunderstandings and diminishing the meaning and value of life. This article discusses the significance of death education through Liszt's symphonic poem <Les Préludes>. Following the poetry of Lamartine, who describes lifeas a prelude to death, the article explores the symphonic poem as a way to reflect on life’s journey and examines Kautenbaum's concept of the “the study of life inherent in death.” Therefore, the use of music in death education not only helps listeners refine their emotions and foster empathy through understanding and closely appreciating actual musical works on the themes of life and death, but it also aids in healing emotional wounds and fears surrounding death, thus allowing individuals to view life more authentically and inclusively.
