조나단 에드워즈의 『이신칭의』에 나타난 칭의 교리 이해에 대한 고찰

초록

본 논문은 종종 조나단 에드워즈의 칭의론이 현대 개혁신학의 칭의론과 다르다고 주장하는 오해를 불식시키고자 하였다. 이를 위해 조나단 에드워즈가 그의 글 『이신칭의』에서 칭의에 대해 어떻게 진술하고 있는지를 현대 개혁신학의 칭의론을 기준으로 하여 면밀하게 고찰하였다. 그 결과 에드워즈는 현대 개혁신학의 칭의론 이해와 동일한 이해를 갖고 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 에드워즈는 칭의가 죄책의 문제를 해결하며, 칭의는 하나님의 단회적 행위이며, 칭의의 효과는 죄의 사면과 영광의 삶으로 구성되며, 칭의는 무상으로 주어지며, 칭의의 공로적 원인은 그리스도의 의며, 칭의는 전가의 방식으로 이루어지며, 칭의의 조건은 믿음이며, 칭의는 언약과 연합에 기초한다고 보았다. 『이신칭의』에 나타난 에드워즈의 칭의 이해는 철저히 개혁주의 칭의론에 부합하였다.

Abstract

This paper tried to dispel misunderstandings that often claim that Jonathan Edwards' understanding of justification is different from that of modern Reformed theology. To this end, I thoroughly examined how Edwards said about justification in his article “Justification by Faith Alone”, based on the justification theory of modern Reformed theology. As a result, it was confirmed that Edwards had the same understanding as the understanding of justification in modern Reformed theology. According to Edwards, justification solves the problem of guilt, justification is one-time act of God, the effect of justification consists of remission of sins and a life of glory, justification is given for free, the meritorious cause of justification is the righteousness of Christ, and justification is made in the way of imputation, the condition of justification is faith, and justification is based on covenant and union. Edwards' understanding of justification in “Justification by Faith Alone” was thoroughly in line with the Reformed theology.
