본 논문은 죄의 전달 교리에 대한 조나단 에드워즈의 관점을 고찰하였다. 바빙크는 에드워즈가 직접 전가를 부인한다고 하고, 에반스, 호튼, 오토는 에드워즈가 실재론을 주장한다고 비판한다. 그러나 핫지, 웨들, 스톰스, 스위니, 조현진, 강웅산 등은 에드워즈가 실재론이나 간접 전가론을 주장한 것이 아니며, 직접 전가론의 주요 사상과 실재론이 설명하고자 하는 의도를 포괄적으로 설명할 수 있는 혁신적인 방법을 찾으려 노력했다고 평가한다. 에드워즈의 『원죄론』을 집중적으로 분석한 결과, 죄의 전달에 대한 에드워즈의 관점은 실재론이 아니며 간접 전가론도 아닌 것으로 판명되었다. 에드워즈는 아담과 그 후손들의 관계를 구성적 실제라는 개념으로 보고 뿌리와 가지에 비유하여 설명함으로써 직접 전가론과 실재론의 장점을 모두 포괄할 수 있는 혁신적인 설명 방식을 제시할 수 있었던 것으로 판단된다.
Abstract
This paper examined Jonathan Edwards' view of the doctrine of the transmission of sin. Bavinck says Edwards denies immediate imputation. Evans, Horton, and Otto criticize Edwards for claiming realism. However, Hodge, Weddle, Storms, Sweeney, Jo, and Kang do not think that Edwards claimed realism or mediate imputation. They argue that Edwards tried to find an innovative way to comprehensively explain the main ideas of immediate imputation and the intention of realism. And the analysis of Edwards’ Original sin shows that Edwards' view of the transmission of sin is not realism, nor mediate imputation. Edwards argues that the relationship between Adam and his descendants can be described as a constituted reality and explained in terms of root and branches, thus suggesting an innovative explanatory method that can encompass both the advantages of immediate imputation theory and realism.
