본 논문의 목적은 그리스도와의 연합 개념이 에드워즈의 언약 사상에 있어 중심을 이루고 있음을 드러내는데 있다. 에드워즈는 개혁파 정통주의 언약 신학 구도를 충실하게 따르는 반면, 언약 개념을 철저하게 그리스도 중심적 으로 이해하고 있다. 그러기 위해서 에드워즈는 언약 논의를 삼위일체의 존 재론적-경륜적 관계에서부터 출발하였고, 그의 비교적 어려운 논리를 독자 들을위해잘대변하는것이본논문이지니는의의중의하나이다. 또한에 드워즈는 구속언약, 행위언약, 은혜언약, 그리고 그의 독특한 개념인 결혼언 약에 대해 공통되게 그리스도가 중심이 되는 한 언약 관점(one-covenant view) 을 견지한다. 이 관점은 언약을 연속성의 관점에서 이해하는 것을 가능케 하 며, 특히 우리와의 관계에 있어서 구속언약에서부터 결혼언약에 이르기까지 그리스도와의 연합을 통해서만 언약의 의미가 유효하게 성립한다는 점을 잘 대변해 주고 있다. 에드워즈가 언약 개념에서 드러내는 그리스도와의 연합 이야말로 그리스도의 탁월성과 유일성을 효과적으로 입증하는 일이었다고 평가할 수 있겠다.
Abstract
The objective of this paper is to prove that the union with Christ concept is central in Jonathan Edwards’s covenant thought. While Edwards faithfully followed the covenant tradition of Reformed Orthodoxy, he consistently con- structed the covenant theology through the christ-centered perspective. For that, he retracted his discussion to the distinction of the ontological-econom- ical Trinity, and a part of the objective for this paper is to represent it in relatively easier terms for the readers. Edwards superbly formed the one-cov- enant view across the covenants of redemption, works, grace, and his own unique one marriage. His view allows a continuity perspective and with re- gard to us it ascertains that the covenants across redemption to marriage bears validity only in light of union with Christ, which adequately demon- strates the supremacy and uniqueness of Christ in his covenant thought.
