Abstract
In §26 of Kant's Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View, the following problematic passage appears: "Women, clergymen, and Jews generally do not become intoxicated. At the very least, they carefully avoid all such appearances of drunkenness, because they are powerless as citizens and must therefore be cautious." Why did Kant regard women, clergymen, and Jews as "powerless as citizens?" This paper examines discussions on citizenship in Anthropology and Lectures on Anthropology, which have not been extensively addressed in prior studies of Kant's concept of citizenship. By exploring the distinctions between these works and his other writings, this study attempts a coherent interpretation in line with his critical-period writings.
