Abstract
Kant’s Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View has not attracted academic interest since its publication in 1798 because it was treated as a practical book that simply conveys miscellaneous information, rather than an academic book that supports a particular theory and refutes other theories. But recently, many scholars are paying special attention to the Anthropology in order to discover new aspects of Kant's philosophy that have been neglected until now. Although most of these attempts focus mainly on the relationship between Kant's ethics and the Anthropology, some scholars try to clarify its significance in connection with Kant's epistemology rather than his ethics. In this paper, we examine the latter attempts of reinterpreting the Anthropology froman epistemological perspective and clarify the limitations and significance of the empirical theory of cognition contained in the book. We first look into the origin of Kant's anthropological project in Chapter II, and then deal with the constitution and its guiding idea of the Anthropology in Chapter III. After these preliminary steps to prepare a basic understanding of the entire work,we examine attempts to reinterpret the Anthropology from a cognitive perspective in Chapter IV. These attempts try to reconstruct the Anthropology’s empirical theory of cognition in connection with Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, and we will examine two representative attempts in detail. In conclusion, in Chapter V, we clarify the limitations of the two attempts previously examined, and at the same time present the significance of the empirical theory of cognition in the Anthropology.
