칸트의 『실천이성비판』(Kritik der praktischen Vernunft, 1788)에서 등장하는 ‘인격 안의 인간성’(Menschheit in der Person) 개념을 이해하는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. ‘인격’(Person), ‘인격성’(Persönlichkeit) 개념에 대한 설명과는 달리, ‘인격 안의 인간성’은 별다른 설명 없이 곳곳에서 쓰이고 있기 때문이다. 『실천이성비판』에서 도덕적 주체인 인격은 두 세계 사이의 존재자로서, 자연의 기계성을 벗어나 자유라는 이념을 추구하는 존재이다. 칸트는 이 자유를 인격성이라 규정한다. 그런데 뒤이어 인간은 신성하지 않지만 인격 안의 인간성만이 신성하다고 주장한다. 여기서 ‘인격 안의 인간성’이란 무엇을 의미하는가? 이를 이해하기 위해 『도덕형이상학 정초』(Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten, 1785)로 거슬러 올라간다. 여기서 ‘인격’ 및 ‘인간성’(Menschheit) 개념의 용례를 분석하고 인간성 개념에 이중의 의미가 있음을 확인할 것이다. 이후 볼프의 『일반 실천 철학』(Philosophia practica universalis, 17381│17502)에서 등장하는 ‘이중의 인격’(duplices personae)을 살펴볼 것이다. 칸트의 ‘인격 안의 인간성’과 볼프의 ‘이중의 인격’을 비교·대조 해봄으로써, 칸트의 ‘인격 안의 인간성’은 전통 형이상학적 질서에서의 영혼 개념을 벗어나서 유기체인 동시에 이성적 본성을 지닌, 자라나고 성장하는 인간이 지니는 개별적이자 보편적인 특성이라는 점이 드러난다. 이는 칸트의 인격이 현상계와 예지계 사이에서 도덕적 실천이라는 끝없는 고군분투를 감행하는 존재임을 확인해 주는 특성인 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to understand the concept of ‘Humanity in Person’ (Menschheit in der Person), which appeared in Kant’s Critique of Practical Reason. Kant explains the concepts of ‘Person’ and ‘Personality’ (Persönlichkeit), but does not sufficiently explain ‘Humanity in person’. In the Critique of Practical Reason, Person as a moral subject is an entity between two worlds that pursues the idea of freedom by escaping the mechanical nature. Kant defines this freedom as Personality. However, he then goes on to claim that Humans are not sacred and that only the Humanity in the Person is sacred. What does ‘Humanity in Person’ mean here? To understand this question, I will read the Foundation of Moral Metaphysics. Here, as a result of analyzing the usage of the concepts ‘Person’ and ‘Humanity’, I confirm that there is a double meaning within the concept of Humanity. Next, I will look at the ‘double Person’ that appears in Wolff’s Universal practical philosophy. Through this, I will compare and contrast Kant’s ‘Humanity in Person’ and Wolff’s ‘double Person’. Kant's ‘Humanity in Person’ breaks away from the concept of soul in the traditional Metaphysical order and reveals that it is an individual and universal characteristic of a growing human being who has both an organism and a rational nature. Through these points, we can see that Kant's Person is a being who endlessly struggles to practice between Phenomena and the Noumena.
