Abstract

How should we treat each other? What is the legitimate way of treatment in which we can reasonably ask each other? Kant’s Formula of Humanity vigorously urges us to treat the humanity as an end in itself and forcefully prohibits us not to use the humanity merely as a means. The formula has been assessed as having an intuitively strong appeal because its commands are considered as morally reasonable and its meanings are more concrete than the other formulas of Kant. The fundamental elements of the Formula, however, have been known as unclear, even controversial among Kant scholars, and have caused academically productive debates. I study the two among such a fundamental elements. First, what is the object of end or means in the Formula? The two compelling candidates are “human being” and “the humanity” Second, what does it mean to use or treat merely as a means? Especially, relating to this question, I present a new problem, that is, the translation problem of German word “brauchen”. I argue that it is a very significant problem whether the word “brauchen” is translated into “use” or “treat” I classify the domestic and the english-speaking papers about the Formula of Humanity into “use-use” interpretation model, “use-treat” model and “treat-treat” model. I deeply and widely extend the differences between “use” and “treat into those between causal order and value order. In sum, by virtue of such theoretical studies, I present some kind of illuminating explanations about the ways of treating human beings.
